Beacons Festival writers!

Below are all the amazing writers we are bringing all the way up to Beacons Festival this year!

Amber Massie-Blomfield is an arts PR by day and a writer of many kinds by night. She came to writing via theatre, and as a playwright had work produced at Theatre Royal Bath, Tricycle, ICA, Camden People's Theatre as well as internationally. As a short story writer, her works have been selected by 'Are You Sitting Comfortably?' and 'Story Tails'. She is an associate artist with Annexe Magazine, who published her short story pamphlet 'The Audience Member', and has recently begun flexing her nascent performer muscle with spoken prose at festivals including, most recently, Leefest. She is also currently involved with ghostwriting the most unlikely of books: a sports autobiography and a maverick business guide.

Carnaby Bennett grew up in a very strange village in North Kent, and will buy a beer for anyone who’s heard of it. He has been writing for over 10 years: silly stories and songs back when he started, developing into more ambitiously silly stories and songs as he entered his teens. Around age 16, he finished his first short story and started writing poems. He kept at this for a few years until he came across Polarbear and Scroobius Pip, which drove him to try spoken word. After performing at open mic nights in pubs in South London and North Kent, he successfully auditioned for the Spoken Word Ensemble at the Roundhouse, and performed with them "As Soon as You Land You Move", a collaborative piece written with the other 11 members of the Ensemble. Carnaby has somehow never seen Titanic, Dirty Dancing, or It's a Wonderful Life.

Toby de Angeli is a spoken word artist from Kent and Sussex and a member of the acclaimed writers collective Elephant. Though only 25, Toby is rapidly gaining recognition as a filmic story teller, in the past three years, he has tenaciously performed stories about strangers who captivate him in fleeting interactions. Described by the Writers Lounge as "awe-inspiring", Toby has collaborated and performed with many national and international collectives and projects, including: Bestival, Secret Garden Party, Wilderness, The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Royal Court, National Youth Theatre, Berlin National Poetry Festival.

His works have also been featured on National Radio, CNN and Sky. He has lead many workshops in creative writing, ranging from the Roundhouse and the Ministry of Stories to schools in Warsaw; he has recently been asked to represent the British Council in Europe. He is also part of the Roundhouse Spoken Word Ensemble, whose show "As Soon As You Land You Move" has been commissioned by the Roundhouse for a run in November 2013 as part of the Roundhouse Poetry Festival.

Milly Prett has been writing from a young age. An early poem was published as part of A Young Writers poetry anthology for South London. She began experimenting with short stories, and by secondary school she had started playwriting. At 16, she was awarded Best Play Script for Strawberry Picking Theatre Festival at the Warehouse Theatre. Different art forms influence Milly's work; she has a background in performance and visual art, which has led her to develop her performance poetry technique.

In 2012 Milly joined The Roundhouse Poetry Ensemble. She has recently been commissioned to write a response to Conrad Shawcross's Timepiece, a light sculpture created for the Roundhouse Mainspace. This has been an exciting project that allows her to merge multidisciplinary art forms. She is inspired by literature, music, sculpture, photography, visual art, performance art and theatre. She wants her work to have a social conscience; she is hugely inspired by outsider culture, female experience and story telling.

Louise Clarke has been a performer from a very early age. As a child, she was a part of local dance groups and theatre companies, but it wasn't until she was studying her drama degree that she realised her passion for writing. The tutors of her Writing for Stage and Screen course recognised Louise’s scriptwriting, and encouraged her to push herself as a writer.

It was with this encouragement that Louise applied to be a part of The Roundhouse Spoken Word Ensemble. Knowing that she wanted to experiment with different styles and forms of writing, the ensemble allowed her to combine her love of story and scriptwriting as well as her love for music and poetry. With the ensemble, Louise co-wrote 'As Soon As You Land You Move' which has been commissioned by the Roundhouse and is set to headline their poetry festival later this year. Coming from an acting background has allowed Louise to connect with her words and give conviction to her performance poetry. She is heavily influenced by her own life experiences as well as music, stories and society.

Invisible Architecture at the Roundhouse, London.

Invisible Architecture - a library and listening station forging international links and creative collaborations between writers and publishers, swapping stories from around the world as they build their cities through what they say.

The two day free installation was at the Roundhouse in London in March 2013 and invited audiences to experience poetry and work from over 30 writers, publishers and small presses located across the globe. There are some photographs from the weekend below and you can see documentation of the whole weekend by clicking here.

A publication was created for the project, it contains collaborative works specifically commissioned for the installation. Sixteen writers were paired up and created a new work in 10 days via email. The writers had not worked together previously and did not know each other. You can buy a copy of the book here.

We aim for the library to become a nomadic resource which can travel from venue to venue - if you are a part of an arts venue and would like to have the library sent to you or if you have any recommendations of places it should travel too please drop us a line: antlerspress [@] gmail.com
